How to Beatmatch

Mixing Basics: Beatmatching and Transitions for Total Beginners

Beatmatching is the art of syncing the tempos (speeds) of two songs so they blend together smoothly, like peanut butter and jelly—or peanut butter and chocolate if you’re fancy. When done right, people won’t even notice the transition; they’ll just keep dancing like nothing happened.

The Basics of Beatmatching:

  1. BPM (Beats Per Minute):
Every song has a tempo, measured in BPM. Think of BPM as how fast the song’s heartbeat is. A slow song might have 70 BPM (think chill vibes), while a fast dance track could be 130 BPM (think let’s sweat like crazy).
  2. Match the BPMs:
To beatmatch, you adjust the speed of one song to match the BPM of the other. Most DJ software and controllers have a BPM display, so you don’t need to do any math (thank goodness).
  3. Align the Beats:
Matching the BPM is step one, but you also need to make sure the beats line up. Otherwise, it’ll sound like two drummers having an argument.

Pro Tip: If you’re new, start with songs that are already close in BPM. It’s like training wheels for your DJ skills.
